Find your English level in minutes, not hours
An adaptive vocabulary and grammar test that thinks while you answer. Every answer chooses the next question, and the test stops the moment it is 90% sure of your CEFR level, from A1 to C2. Most learners finish in 16–30 questions.

Why this test is different
It adapts to you
No wasted questions. Get one right and the next is harder; miss one and it is easier. A short test that is as accurate as a long one.
It knows when it knows
After every answer it works out how likely each level is. It stops as soon as one level is 90% certain, and tells you how sure it is.
A report you can see
Graphs of your level, of how the test homed in on it, and of your strengths and weak spots: word meaning, word form and collocation, precision, and the grammar behind them.
A plan, not just a grade
Where to start in the Universal Core series, which course fits, what to practise. Paid learners also get framework-based advice for each weak area and a four-week plan.
What you get at the end
- Your CEFR level and how sure the test is of it
- The path the test took to find it, question by question
- Strengths and areas to work on, against what your level predicts
- Your next steps: episodes, a course and practice
Example report
“B2, 91% sure, after 17 questions.” An example, not your result.
How the result is worked out
- Every question is levelled A1–C2 with the Gift of Language framework, aligned with the CEFR, and reviewed by an expert. Each has a difficulty on one scale, which is refined from real learners' answers over time.
- The test uses item response theory, the method behind computer-adaptive exams: after each answer it updates the probability of every level and chooses the question that tells it most.
- It stops at 90% confidence (at least 6 questions), or after 30 questions if your answers sit right on the border between two levels; the report then says so.
- Free for every registered learner, as often as you like: each result is added to your progress on the dashboard. Learners with a paid course also take a level check at the end of each course section.
- The result is an indicative estimate, not an official CEFR certificate.
